Landmark Trees in Theydon Bois

Until the mid-19th century Theydon Bois village was a collection of modest houses on the edge of Epping Forest, clustered around the large village green, with St Mary's Church and several outlying farmhouses. With the coming of the railway the village grew rapidly into the surrounding farmland, incorporating many hedgerow trees. The Green itself was, in 1832, planted with a formal avenue of oaks, which has become an important part of the village's identity. For the full story of the trees of Theydon Bois, please see the Theydon Bois Community Tree Strategy.

Favourite Tree winners in Theydon Bois include oaks on the village green, in St Mary's churchyard and veteran countryside oaks at Great Gregories and Blackacre farms, as well as the pine outside the former 16 String Jack public house. The veteran tree survey has also found many notable trees, mostly oaks, throughout the village and the surrounding countryside.

The hunt for the village's Landmark trees is complete, with a first phase of trees nominated in 2015 by the wider public, supplemented more recently by suggestions from the village tree wardens. The overall winner is a veteran oak on the slopes above the village at Great Gregories. The judges were particularly impressed by the reasons for the nomination by a serving soldier, who mentioned how recollection of the tree brought back thoughts of home, when serving far away. The village primary school was also well represented, both by trees in its grounds and by the many suggestions pupils made about their landmark trees across the village. These are now all being recorded, and can be seen here

However we will still be pleased to have any suggestions of landmark or veteran trees that we have missed!
